Event:
  10th Annual Healthcare Heroes Banquet

Event Topic: "A Decade of Healthcare Excellence"

Keynote Speaker:  Dr. Ron J. Anderson, Parkland Health & Hospital System

Speaker Bio:  Ron J. Anderson, M.D., is President and Chief Executive Officer of Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, Texas. Parkland is considered the premier public hospital in the United States. It has served the Dallas County community since 1894.

Dr. Anderson’s leadership, dedication to the underserved, commitment to improving the health care system for not just his hospital but for the state and nation, is ultimately a byproduct of his passion to do what’s right for those in need.

Yet Dr. Anderson has always sought out much more work outside the scope of his job description for the chance to better help those in need. Dr. Anderson has long championed causes that improve health care for the medically underserved and, as a result, he has become one of the nation’s leading advocates of health care for the poor.

His vision of health care for all, regardless of ability to pay, and his desire to see that happen have led to groundbreaking changes to the U.S. health care system. In 1985, he played a major role in the passage of landmark legislation concerning indigent health care in Texas that banned “patient dumping.” Dr. Anderson quickly became a national spokesperson on this issue and his work ultimately led to the passage of federal legislation signed into law April 7, 1986, by President Ronald Reagan.

His list of awards and honors is long. Notably in 2005, he was chosen by his peers as number one on Modern Physician magazine’s list of the 50 most powerful physician executives. That same year, he was also voted number one by his peers for Modern Healthcare magazine’s list of 100 most powerful people in healthcare. Since then, he continues to be voted on the lists.
Under Dr. Anderson’s leadership, Parkland has been honored with the Foster G. McGaw Award for Community Service from the American Hospital Association. The hospital system is also a multiple winner of The National Association of Public Hospitals Safety Net Award for Community Service.
